Last year, the EPA implemented a new set of regulations regarding the Renovation, Repair and Painting of buildings containing lead-based paints. Under the new rules, the EPA "requires that firms performing renovation, repair, and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in pre-1978 homes be certified by the EPA and that they use certified renovators who are trained by EPA-approved training providers to follow lead-safe work practices."

Last month, we sent five of our staff to certified training courses, and I am happy to report that all of them passed the test and are now officially certified.

If you have an older home that you are considering renovating, please be aware that there may be a significant additional costs involved in your project if lead is present. The remediation measures required to comply with lead-safe practices may include tenting off work areas, meticulous cleaning during demolition stage, ensuring that lead dust does not migrate off site, and documenting this effort. Of course, all of these extra steps cost time and money.
