Bethesda Magazine, May/June 2009
When Susan Mahan of Bethesda adds up her utility bills each month, she understands why a growing number of people want to live in “green” homes. Mahan says the monthly total for gas and electric for her 5,000-square-foot colonial has gone as high as $1,200. “This house was perfect for raising our seven children and seeing them off to college, when the costs of maintaining this house were not crazy,” she says. “If I was looking to buy now, absolutely I would look for a home with alternative energy sources.”

They crave a green friendly home and a change from more standard building designs. They want a bungalow.

When Grace and Ed Novak began looking at Arts and Crafts-style homes, Grace was drawn to the porches and the bungalow

of Martin’s Addition in Chevy Chase, raze the house on the property and build a new one.
And they hire Bethesda Bungalows to build it.

Four years ago, contractor Peter Guida started a new business called Bethesda Bungalows. His aim was to build smaller houses better, so the home buyer would have a choice: For the same price, they could purchase either a 7,000 square-foot home with fewer extra details and more standard materials or a 3,000 to 4,000-square foot house with higher quality materials and more extras.
